Material we learned fromΒΆ
The book benefited tremendously from other open resources:
- The Turing WayCommunity, 2022
- Software Carpentries
- EarthDataScience at CU Boulder β lessons adapted from materials developed by Earth Lab
- geohackweek
AI assistanceΒΆ
Some tutorial drafts in the 2024 edition drew on ChatGPT. The 2026 edition was revised
with the help of an agentic AI assistant (Claude), with all content reviewed by the
instructors. The French and Spanish editions were produced the same way; the reports
that guided that work are kept in
docs/ai-logs/.
Datasets and code are attributed where they appear in the book.
AcknowledgmentsΒΆ
Many people beyond the author list have shaped this book.
The GeoSMART team supports the project: Anthony Arendt, Yiyu Ni, and Akash Kharita.
Repository contributors who committed changes not covered above: velgueta and tianhg.
Course staff and students of ESS 469/569 have improved the material every year it has run, by finding the places where an explanation did not survive contact with a real learner. Teaching assistants carry much of that load.
The translation effort is a community project; French and Spanish reviewers are
credited in docs/REVIEW_RECORD.md
as their reviews land.
If you contributed and are not credited here, that is an oversight rather than a judgment β please open an issue and we will fix it.
